Here’s the newest installment of a brand new series from the Parents beauty department about mommy bloggers. Each installment will feature what beauty means to real moms no matter what their beauty routine is like—and how they take time to themselves after having children.

Cassie Bustamante (Jalapeno Photography)

Meet Cassie Bustamante. She’s the face behind Primitive and Proper, your new go-to for all things vintage furniture, thrifting and interior decor ideas, and mom to Sawyer, 9; and Emerson,7. Cassie started blogging as a way to promote her furniture refinishing business, but now she helps run a vintage barn sale in Maryland.

What is your beauty routine like?

I keep things pretty quick and efficient.  After I shower, I moisturize and use an eye cream, then it’s under-eye concealer, a little blush, lip gloss, and mascara.  If I am going out, I will wear eyeshadow and eyeliner.

How has your beauty routines changed since you had children?

I stopped getting pedicures, manicures, the periodic facials, and I now spend much less time in the shower!

What is the importance of taking time to yourself?

My life is so busy with my business, my family and my blog that I crave time just for me.  Most days I run or take my dogs for a hike, and the fresh air allows me to think, focus and decrease my stress.  And I always notice that stress takes a toll on my skin. Exercise and alone time keep my stress levels down, and keep my emotions in check.

The best beauty advice I’ve ever received is… A genuine smile is the best thing you can put on your face.

My beauty advice for moms is…  Those sweet little eyes look at you with nothing but love and see you as the most beautiful woman in the world—just as yourself—with no makeup on.  Remember not to judge yourself too harshly because those eyes are watching you and will start to judge, too, or doubt themselves.

Have your children ever commented on your makeup or beauty routine?

Ha! Yes, just last week we were headed off to get family photos taken, and Emmy had a little patch of dry skin on her chin, so I told her I wanted to put concealer on it.  She said, “Is that the makeup you put on your forehead to cover your zits?  Because you do have zits on your forehead.”

PRIMITIVE AND PROPER’S FIVE FAVES

Bare Ecentuals Pretty Amazing Lipcolor

1. Black Sparrow Soaps Dead Sea Mud Mask: This mask helps minimize my pores and keeps my skin feeling smooth.  It’s also locally made, and I prefer to buy local when I can!

2. Under eye concealer: I am not super picky about this, but I prefer it to come in a stick!  Since having kids, I find this to be an instant face lift!

3. Burt’s Bees Naturally Nourishing Milk & Honey Body Lotion: It smells soft and subtly sweet and leaves my legs feeling smooth.  It’s also gentle enough to use on my children.

4. Eco Natural Soaps Blush in Pink Rose: This blush goes on beautifully and leaves me with the perfect glow.

5. Bare Escentuals Pretty Amazing Lipcolor in Confidence: I love this lipstick! It applies much like a gloss and stays on like a stain, which is great for this low-maintenance mama!
